About This Page

Part 1 | Introduction ⭱

This page to let you know what we will be doing for our first face to face session.

Welcome ⭱

Welcome!

We are going to have our first attempt at a Cubs evening at the Scout Hut following the Covid-19 lock down, within the current rules set by the Scouts nationally.

We have tried to plan as much as possible; but we will ask you to bear with us if things need to change last minute; particularly given the current concerns about increasing COVID-19 infection rates.

We have published a separate page setting out our Covid-19 measures.

On to the fun! ⭱

Our overall plan for the next few weeks is to focus on getting all the Cubs the Challenge Badge.

In our first meeting we will have three separate games areas which the Cubs will rotate between, so that your Cub can say that they have tried a new sport.

Each Cub will play as a single player, unless we have an even number of Cubs, in which case we may create teams of two.

The forecast for the 29th October 2020 is some light rain, so please bring wet weather gear as we will try to go ahead whatever the weather!

If you are interested about what sports we are trying, we have set out in this page a lot of information for you to explore with your cub.

We have set out at the end of this page our risk assessments.

See you soon!

Part 2 | Hockey Stick Putting ⭱

Introduction ⭱

Our first game is to learn about the art of putting.

Putting is an important, and frustrating part of the game of Golf.

We will not be using putters or golf balls.

Instead, we will be using plastic Hockey Sticks and soft Hocky balls which the Scout Hut as a stock of.

Part 4 | Petanque ⭱

Here we will try a game that is very popular in France.

Introduction ⭱

Our last game is to learn something about Pétanque.

It is like a game of bowls, but you throw the bowl rather than roll it.

Learn about Petanque ⭱

Have you ever tried Pétanque (pronounced PET ONK)?

It is a game loved by the French.

It is a game of bowls, which involves throwing the balls, rather than rolling them.

You each have some heavy balls (known in French as "Boules", pronounced BOOL).

You then take turns to throw them at a target (known as a jack, or in French cochonnet, pronounced COSH ON A).

The objective is to get a boule closer to the jack than the other player.

You are free to use your boule to knock away the boule of the other player.

Here are some fun videos to find out more:-

Location, Equipment, Practice ⭱

Location

The scout hut garden area.

Equipment

A set of boules, which will be provided by the Scout Hut.

A mat to stand on when you throw, again provided by the Scout Hut.

Practice

Each Cub will all have a practice at holding and throwing the boules in the correct manner.

The Cubs will stand two meters apart and throw a practice Boule down the garden. No collecting the Boule until all have thrown.

Game ⭱

Each game is played between two Cubs.

We have enough Boules for two games at the same time.

Scoring

The score for a round is the number of Boules the winning cub has nearer the Jack than the Boules of the other cub.

Safety Measures ⭱

Leaders, Cubs and Helpers will need to observe the following safety measures, which should be explained at the start:-

Covid 19

Risk of Injury
